Strength, focus, determination

Slat Mill

Dogs run self-powered treadmills to see which dog can cover the most distance in a 2 minute period.

  1. POSITION THE DOG

The dog is safely placed on the non-motorized mill and secured according to the event’s equipment requirements.
  2. START THE CLOCK
The run begins when the timer starts and the dog begins moving the slatted belt under its own power.
  3. MAINTAIN THE RUN
The handler encourages the dog while speed, distance, or another performance measurement is recorded.
  4. RECORD THE RESULT
When the timed run ends, the dog’s final distance, speed, or completion time is used to determine its result.

How it works

A slat mill is powered entirely by the dog, allowing each competitor to control its own pace. Depending on the event, dogs may compete for the fastest speed, greatest distance, or strongest performance within a set time.

Why Slat Mill?

Slat mill gives energetic dogs a controlled outlet for running at their own natural pace. Because the mill is powered by the dog rather than a motor, the dog controls how quickly the belt moves.

Regular slat mill work can support conditioning, endurance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. It also provides focused physical activity for dogs that enjoy running and working toward a goal.

Slat mill events welcome dogs with different experience levels and athletic abilities. The community emphasizes responsible handling, proper conditioning, and helping each dog improve upon its own performance.

TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED

Introduce the slat mill slowly and allow your dog time to become comfortable with the sound and movement. Keep the first sessions brief, positive, and focused on building confidence. A nearby club may have slat-mills to try before investing in your own.

Find an experienced trainer or local club that can teach you how to position, secure, and motivate your dog safely. Proper setup and supervision are important during every run.

Build endurance gradually rather than asking for maximum speed or distance immediately. Watch your dog’s movement, breathing, and recovery, and always provide adequate rest and hydration.
