Bully Max vs Purina Pro Plan Sport: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Bully Max and Purina Pro Plan Sport are both high-protein, high-fat dry foods made for active dogs, and on paper they start in the same place: the best-known formula from each brand is a 30/20 (30% protein, 20% fat). The biggest published differences are calories per cup, the ingredient lists, and how each brand states it meets AAFCO standards. This side-by-side comparison uses each company's own published numbers as of October 2026, so you can decide which food fits your dog.

Bully Max vs Pro Plan Sport at a glance

  • Same headline numbers: Pro Plan Sport Performance 30/20 Chicken & Rice and Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Chicken both guarantee 30% protein and 20% fat.
  • Calories per cup: Pro Plan Sport 30/20 Chicken & Rice lists 484 kcal/cup. Bully Max 30/20 Chicken lists 535 kcal/cup, 30/20 Beef 530, and PRO Series 31/25 600.
  • Life stage: Purina states its 30/20 Chicken & Rice is complete and balanced for all life stages, substantiated by AAFCO feeding tests. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines.
  • Range: Pro Plan Sport offers several protein/fat levels and very large bag sizes. Bully Max offers a chicken 30/20, a chicken-free beef 30/20 and a 600 kcal/cup PRO formula.
  • Short version: both are built for active dogs. Bully Max packs more calories into each cup, which suits hard keepers, bully breeds that need to keep weight on and dogs that do best on smaller meals.

The Short Answer: Which Dog Each Food May Suit

There is no single “winner” for every dog. Both brands publish complete, balanced, high-protein foods for athletic dogs. What separates them is how much energy is in each cup, which proteins they use and what range of formulas each brand offers.

  • Pro Plan Sport may suit owners who want a food whose label cites AAFCO feeding tests, a choice of several protein and fat levels (including a 26/16 for less intense activity), a salmon-first option, and large bags sold in many stores.
  • Bully Max may suit owners of hard keepers, bully breeds and working dogs who want more calories per cup, a chicken-free 30/20 option (Beef), a 600 kcal/cup formula for dogs that need even more, and a family-owned, made-in-USA brand with zero recalls.

If your dog is healthy, holding a good weight and doing well on the food it eats now, there is no need to switch. If your dog struggles to keep weight on, eats a large volume to hold condition, or needs a chicken-free option, read on.

This is the formula most people mean when they search “Purina Pro Plan Sport.” Purina's product page names it Pro Plan All Ages Sport Performance 30/20 Chicken & Rice Formula and lists:

  • Guaranteed analysis: crude protein 30.0% min, crude fat 20.0% min, crude fiber 3.0% max, moisture 12.0% max, with EPA and DHA each at 0.12% min (shop.purina.com).

Where Pro Plan Sport Is Strong

A fair comparison has to give credit where it's due. Based on Purina's own published information, Pro Plan Sport has real strengths:

  • Feeding-test substantiation. The 30/20 Chicken & Rice label states its complete-and-balanced claim is backed by animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures, for all life stages including large-breed growth.
  • Guaranteed omega-3s. EPA and DHA minimums are printed in the guaranteed analysis.
  • Choice of energy levels. A 26/16 for active dogs, two 30/20 formulas for hard-working dogs, plus puppy formulas.
  • A salmon-first 30/20. The Salmon & Rice formula lists 534 kcal/cup with salmon as the first ingredient.
  • Availability. Pro Plan Sport is sold in large bags (up to 50 lb) and at many retailers.

Bully Max Performance Foods: What the Label Says

Bully Max is a family-owned U.S. company founded in 2009. Our foods are high-performance, meat-based nutrition, made in the USA, and every batch is triple tested for safety. We have zero recalls. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines. Here are the three formulas that compete most directly with Pro Plan Sport.

Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Chicken

Bully Max 30/20 High Protein matches Pro Plan Sport 30/20 on protein and fat: 30% and 20%. The difference is energy density. At 535 calories per cup, it has 51 more calories per cup than the 484 kcal/cup Purina lists for Pro Plan Sport 30/20 Chicken & Rice, about 10% more. For a dog that needs a lot of fuel, that means a slightly smaller scoop for the same calories. It also includes TruMune to support digestion and immune health. Learn more about the benefits of TruMune in dog food.

Bully Max PRO Series 31/25 High Calorie

Some dogs need more than any 30/20 delivers: working dogs, sport dogs in heavy training, and hard keepers that drop weight easily. PRO Series 31/25 High Calorie has 31% protein, 25% fat and 600 calories per cup. That's the highest calorie density of any food in this comparison. The Pro Plan Sport formulas in this comparison top out at 30% protein and 20% fat, so PRO is the closer fit for a dog that needs more energy than a 30/20 provides. Our guide to high-calorie dog food explains which dogs need it.

Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Beef (Chicken-Free)

Both 30/20 Pro Plan Sport formulas in the table include poultry ingredients on the label. If your dog does better without chicken, Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Beef keeps the 30/20 numbers with no chicken in the ingredient list. Beef meal is the first ingredient, it has 530 calories per cup, and it includes 10 million CFU/lb of probiotics. If you suspect a food sensitivity, work with your vet before changing foods. Calories per Cup: Why It Matters for Active Dogs

Protein and fat percentages get the attention, but calories per cup decide how much your dog actually eats. Two foods with the same 30/20 numbers can still differ in energy per scoop. A more calorie-dense food lets a hard-working dog or a hard keeper meet its needs without a huge bowl. A less dense food gives a dog that gains easily more volume for the same calories.

Here is what that looks like for an active adult dog. These are estimates for comparison only.

Dog weight Active adult (calories/day) Pro Plan Sport 30/20 Chicken & Rice (484 kcal/cup) Bully Max 30/20 Chicken (535 kcal/cup) Bully Max PRO 31/25 (600 kcal/cup)
40 lb about 1,230 about 2.5 cups about 2.3 cups about 2.1 cups
60 lb about 1,670 about 3.4 cups about 3.1 cups about 2.8 cups
80 lb about 2,070 about 4.3 cups about 3.9 cups about 3.4 cups
100 lb about 2,450 about 5.1 cups about 4.6 cups about 4.1 cups

Estimates only: resting energy (70 × body weight in kg0.75) times 2.0 for an active adult, divided by each food's published calories per cup. Dogs in hard training or working long days can need more. Always start from the feeding guide on the bag you buy, then adjust by body condition.

Whatever you feed, watch your dog, not just the chart. You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure and see a waist. Adjust by about 10% at a time. The dog food calculator runs these numbers for your dog, and how much should I feed my dog explains the method. If your dog is losing weight without a clear reason, see your vet before you change foods.

Protein and Fat: Reading the 30/20 Numbers

“30/20” is shorthand for the guaranteed analysis: at least 30% crude protein and at least 20% crude fat. Both brands use it the same way, and both numbers are as-fed minimums, so the food may contain a little more. A few things worth knowing when you compare:

  • Moisture affects the percentages. Guaranteed analysis is measured with the moisture in the food. Purina lists 12% max moisture for Pro Plan Sport 30/20. When moisture differs between foods, compare them on a dry-matter basis or just compare calories per cup.
  • Fat drives calories. Fat has more than twice the calories of protein or carbohydrate per gram. That is why PRO 31/25, with 25% fat, reaches 600 kcal/cup.
  • Protein source matters too. The percentage tells you how much protein, not where it comes from. Read the ingredient list to see the main protein sources.

For a deeper look, read the truth about protein content on dog food labels and the best protein sources for dogs.

AAFCO Statements: Feeding Tests vs Nutrient Profiles

Every complete dog food sold in the U.S. carries a nutritional adequacy statement. AAFCO allows two main ways to support it: formulating the food to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles, or running animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures. Both routes result in a food that can be labeled complete and balanced for the life stage named.

  • Pro Plan Sport 30/20 Chicken & Rice: Purina states its adequacy is substantiated by animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures, for all life stages including growth of large sized dogs (70 lb or more as an adult). That is a genuine strength.
  • Bully Max: every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines. Bully Max 30/20 Beef is formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).

Our guide to AAFCO labels and what really matters explains how to read these statements on any bag.

Pro Plan Sport may be the better fit if

  • You want a label that cites AAFCO feeding tests.
  • Your dog does well on fish and you want a salmon-first 30/20.
  • Your dog is active but gains weight easily, and a 26/16 fits better than a 30/20.
  • You need very large bags or want to buy in local stores.
  • Your dog is already thriving on it. A food that works is worth keeping.

Bully Max may be the better fit if

  • Your dog is a hard keeper and needs more calories per cup to “put on weight” or “keep weight on,” as our customers describe it.
  • Your dog works, pulls, trains for protection sports or runs hard, and needs more than a 30/20 delivers (PRO 31/25, 600 kcal/cup).
  • You want a chicken-free 30/20 (Beef).
  • You own a bully breed or pit bull. American Bullies and pit bulls make up nearly two-thirds of our customers' dogs, and our sponsor dogs compete in weight pull, conformation and protection sports.
  • You prefer a family-owned, made-in-USA brand with zero recalls and every batch triple tested for safety.

Why Owners Choose Bully Max

Proof comes first. Bully Max has over 50,000 5/5 reviews, a Dog Food Advisor 5/5 rating, and has served millions of dogs. In our post-purchase survey of about 2,400 buyers, the most common reason for choosing Bully Max was reviews and visible results (about 20%). Protein, calories and ingredients (about 14%) and quality and trust, including made in USA and zero recalls (about 14%), were close behind. About 14% said their picky dog finally ate. In their own words:

“The ability to provide a protein rich diet to my pup, who is naturally muscular and athletic”
— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

“Amount of protein and fat in a bag!”
— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

“Zero recalls and nutritional value”
— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

How to Switch from Pro Plan Sport to Bully Max

Any food change should be gradual. A slow switch gives your dog's digestion time to adjust and makes it easier to spot a food that doesn't agree with your dog.

Days Old food Bully Max
1–2 About 75% About 25%
3–4 About 50% About 50%
5–6 About 25% About 75%
7–10 0% 100%

Go slower for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Because Bully Max has more calories per cup than many foods, recalculate the daily amount instead of swapping scoop for scoop.

Some softer stools in the first days can be normal. See your vet if your dog has vomiting, diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two, blood in the stool, or stops eating.
