Bully Max vs VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Bully Max and VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus are both 30/20 dry foods (30% protein, 20% fat) aimed at active, working and sporting dogs, and both list a named meat meal as the first ingredient. The biggest published difference is energy: VICTOR lists 406 calories per cup for Hi-Pro Plus, while Bully Max 30/20 Chicken lists 535 and PRO Series 31/25 lists 600. Life-stage statements, protein sources and the extras each brand adds differ too. This comparison uses each company's own published numbers as of October 14, 2026 so you can decide which food fits your dog.

Bully Max vs VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus at a glance

  • Same headline numbers: VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus and Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Chicken both list 30% protein and 20% fat.
  • Calories per cup: VICTOR lists 406 kcal/cup for Hi-Pro Plus. Bully Max 30/20 Chicken lists 535, 30/20 Beef 530 and PRO Series 31/25 600, so a Bully Max cup carries roughly 30% to 48% more energy.

  • Life stage: VICTOR states Hi-Pro Plus is formulated for all life stages except growth of large-size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult). Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines.
  • Short version: both are built for hard-working dogs. VICTOR offers a multi-meat recipe in bags up to 50 lb; Bully Max packs more calories into each cup and covers large-breed puppies.

The Short Answer: Which Dog Each Food May Suit

There is no single winner for every dog. Both brands sell complete and balanced dry foods with real meat protein. What separates them is how much energy is in each cup, which proteins and carbohydrates they use, which life stages the label covers, and what each brand adds on top.

  • VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus may suit owners who want a multi-protein 30/20 (beef, pork, chicken and fish meals) with gluten-free grains, probiotics and L-carnitine printed in the guaranteed analysis, big 40 and 50 lb bags, and a food made in the brand's own Texas facility.
  • Bully Max may suit owners of hard keepers, bully breeds and working dogs who want more calories per cup, a chicken-free 30/20 option (Beef), a 600 kcal/cup formula for dogs that need even more, a food whose label covers large-breed puppies, and a family-owned, made-in-USA brand with zero recalls.

If your dog is healthy, holding a good weight and doing well on the food in the bowl today, there is no reason to switch. If your dog struggles to keep weight on, eats a large volume to hold condition, or you want a different protein or more calories per cup, read on.

VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus: What the Label Says

VICTOR describes Hi-Pro Plus as a nutrient-dense, high-energy formula for growing puppies, pregnant or nursing females and sporting or high-activity dogs. According to the Hi-Pro Plus product page on victorpetfood.com (as of October 14, 2026):

  • Guaranteed analysis: crude protein 30.0% min, crude fat 20.0% min, crude fiber 3.8% max, moisture 9.0% max, linoleic acid 2.6% min, alpha-linolenic acid 0.4% min, DHA 0.1% min, zinc 150 mg/kg min, selenium 0.35 mg/kg min, vitamin E 150 IU/kg min, L-carnitine 100 mg/kg min and total microorganisms 80,000,000 CFU/lb min (Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis).
  • Calories: 3,815 kcal/kg and 406 kcal/cup.
  • First ingredients: beef meal, grain sorghum, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), whole grain millet, blood meal conventionally dried, dehydrated alfalfa meal, yeast culture, pork meal, chicken meal, menhaden fish meal.
  • Protein sources, as VICTOR states them: 88% from meat, 2% from plants and vegetables, 10% from grains; made from gluten-free grains.
  • AAFCO statement: formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages, except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
  • What VICTOR highlights: its VPRO Blend of ingredients for digestibility, immune function, and skin and coat; bag sizes of 5, 15, 30, 40 and 50 lb.

Where VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus Is Strong

A fair comparison gives credit where it is due. Based on VICTOR's own published information:

  • Multi-meat recipe. Beef, pork, chicken and fish meals in one bag give a dog several animal proteins at once.
  • Extras printed in the guaranteed analysis. Probiotics at 80 million CFU/lb, L-carnitine, DHA, zinc and selenium are all guaranteed minimums, not just mentions.
  • Gluten-free grains. Sorghum and millet instead of wheat or corn gluten.
  • Big bags. 40 and 50 lb sizes suit multi-dog homes and kennels.
  • Made in the brand's own facility. VICTOR states Hi-Pro Plus is made in its Texas facility.

Bully Max Performance Foods: What the Label Says

Bully Max is a family-owned U.S. company founded in 2009. Our foods are high-performance, meat-based nutrition, made in the USA, and every batch is triple tested for safety. We have zero recalls. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines. These are the three formulas that compete most directly with VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus, the brand's best-known high-energy formula.

Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Chicken

Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Chicken lists chicken meal first, 30% protein, 20% fat and 535 calories per cup. That is 129 more calories per cup than the 406 VICTOR lists for Hi-Pro Plus, about 32% more, so a 60 lb working dog eats roughly three cups instead of four for the same energy. It also includes TruMune, a postbiotic that supports digestion and immune health; see the benefits of TruMune in dog food. The grains are brown rice, sorghum and barley.

Bully Max PRO Series 31/25 High Calorie

Some dogs need more than any 30/20 delivers: working dogs, sport dogs in heavy training, and hard keepers that drop weight easily. PRO Series 31/25 High Calorie has 31% protein, 25% fat and 600 calories per cup, the highest calorie density of any food in this comparison. Hi-Pro Plus tops out at 30/20 and 406 kcal/cup, so PRO is the closer fit for a dog that is eating a big bowl of a 30/20 and still not holding weight. Our guide to high-calorie dog food explains which dogs need it.

Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Beef (Chicken-Free)

Hi-Pro Plus includes chicken fat and chicken meal, so it is not a chicken-free food. If your dog does better without chicken, Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Beef keeps the 30/20 numbers with no chicken in any ingredient: beef meal first, 530 calories per cup, probiotics at 10 million CFU/lb, and no corn, wheat, or by-products. It is formulated for all life stages, including growth of large-size dogs. If you suspect a food sensitivity, work with your vet before changing foods, and see our guide to chicken-free dog food.

Calories per Cup: Why It Matters

Protein and fat percentages get the attention, but calories per cup decide how much your dog actually eats. Two foods with similar headline numbers can differ a lot in energy per scoop. A more calorie-dense food lets a hard-working dog or a hard keeper meet its needs without a huge bowl; a less dense food gives a dog that gains easily more volume for the same calories. This is the biggest gap between the two brands: on VICTOR's and Bully Max's own numbers, a cup of Bully Max 30/20 Chicken carries about 32% more energy than a cup of Hi-Pro Plus.

Dog weight Active adult (calories/day) VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus (406 kcal/cup) Bully Max 30/20 Chicken (535 kcal/cup) Bully Max PRO 31/25 (600 kcal/cup)
40 lb about 1,231 about 3.0 cups about 2.3 cups about 2.1 cups
60 lb about 1,668 about 4.1 cups about 3.1 cups about 2.8 cups
80 lb about 2,070 about 5.1 cups about 3.9 cups about 3.5 cups
100 lb about 2,447 about 6.0 cups about 4.6 cups about 4.1 cups

Estimates only: resting energy (70 × body weight in kg0.75) times 2.0 for an active adult, divided by each food's published calories per cup. Working dogs and dogs in hard training can need more. Start from the feeding guide on the bag you buy, then adjust by body condition.

Whatever you feed, watch the dog, not just the chart. You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure and see a waist from above. Adjust by about 10% at a time. The dog food calculator runs these numbers for your dog, and how much should I feed my dog explains the method.

Protein, Fat and Ingredients: Reading the Numbers

  • Guaranteed analysis is a floor, not a recipe. "30/20" means at least 30% crude protein and at least 20% crude fat, measured as fed. VICTOR lists 9% maximum moisture for Hi-Pro Plus; Bully Max foods are also dry kibble, so the as-fed numbers compare directly.
  • Fat drives calories. Fat has more than twice the calories per gram of protein or carbohydrate, which is why PRO 31/25 at 25% fat reaches 600 kcal/cup.
  • Protein source matters as much as the percentage. Hi-Pro Plus leads with beef meal and adds blood meal, pork meal, chicken meal and fish meal. Bully Max 30/20 Chicken leads with chicken meal and 30/20 Beef with beef meal. Our guides to meat meal in dog food and protein on dog food labels explain how to read an ingredient list.
  • AAFCO statements tell you who the food is for. VICTOR's label covers all life stages except large-breed growth, so for a Cane Corso, Mastiff or XL Bully puppy it is not the stated fit. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines. Our guide to AAFCO labels and what really matters covers how to read them.

Where Each Food Wins

VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus may be the better fit if

  • You want several meat proteins in one recipe.
  • You want probiotics, L-carnitine and DHA printed as guaranteed minimums.
  • You need 40 or 50 lb bags for a multi-dog home.
  • Your dog gains weight easily on a 30/20 and a lower-calorie cup gives you more volume per meal.
  • Your dog is already thriving on it. A food that works is worth keeping.

Bully Max may be the better fit if

  • Your dog is a hard keeper and needs more calories per cup to put weight on or keep it on.
  • Your dog works, pulls, trains for protection sports or hunts hard, and needs more than a 30/20 delivers (PRO 31/25, 600 kcal/cup).
  • You have a large-breed puppy that will be 70 lb or more as an adult.
  • You want a chicken-free 30/20 (Beef).
  • You own a bully breed, pit bull, Mastiff, Cane Corso, Rottweiler or Shepherd. Large, short-haired working breeds are who Bully Max is built for, and our sponsor dogs compete in weight pull, conformation and protection sports.
  • You prefer a family-owned, made-in-USA brand with zero recalls and every batch triple tested.

How to Switch from VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus to Bully Max

Any food change should be gradual. A slow switch gives your dog's digestion time to adjust and makes it easier to spot a food that does not agree with your dog. Full schedule in how to switch your dog to Bully Max.

Days Old food Bully Max
1–2 About 75% About 25%
3–4 About 50% About 50%
5–6 About 25% About 75%
7–10 0% 100%

Go slower for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Because Bully Max has more calories per cup, recalculate the daily amount instead of swapping scoop for scoop.

Some softer stools in the first days can be normal. See your vet if your dog has vomiting, diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two, blood in the stool, or stops eating.

Is VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus a good dog food?

Hi-Pro Plus is a complete and balanced 30/20 food that VICTOR positions for high-activity dogs, with multi-meat proteins, probiotics and L-carnitine guaranteed on the label. Whether it is the right food depends on your dog's activity, body condition and life stage; VICTOR's own statement excludes large-breed growth.

Is Bully Max better than VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus?

Neither is best for every dog. On published numbers the 30/20 formulas match on protein and fat; Bully Max 30/20 Chicken has about 32% more calories per cup (535 vs 406), Bully Max offers a chicken-free 30/20 and a 600 kcal/cup PRO formula, and its foods cover large-breed puppies. VICTOR offers a multi-meat recipe, guaranteed probiotics and L-carnitine, and 50 lb bags.

How many calories are in VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus?

As of October 14, 2026, VICTOR lists 3,815 kcal/kg and 406 kcal per cup for Hi-Pro Plus.

Does VICTOR Hi-Pro Plus contain chicken?

Yes. The ingredient list includes chicken fat and chicken meal. For a chicken-free 30/20, Bully Max 30/20 Beef has no chicken in any ingredient.

Can I switch my dog from VICTOR to Bully Max?

Yes. Mix the foods over 7 to 10 days, and recalculate portions because Bully Max has more calories per cup. Use the dog food calculator to set a starting amount.

Pick the Food That Fits the Dog in Front of You

Both brands make a serious 30/20. If your dog holds weight easily on four cups a day and you like a multi-meat recipe, Hi-Pro Plus does the job. If you are feeding a hard keeper, a working dog or a large-breed puppy, more calories per cup and a label that covers large-breed growth are the reasons to choose Bully Max. Start with Bully Max 30/20 High Protein Chicken for an active adult, step up to PRO Series 31/25 for working, sport and underweight dogs, or choose 30/20 Beef for a chicken-free 30/20.
