Best Dog Food for Cane Corso Puppies: What to Feed and How Much

The best food for a Cane Corso puppy is a large-breed growth formula with meat as the first ingredient, around 22 to 26% protein, 12 to 16% fat, and controlled calcium, fed in measured meals so the puppy grows at a steady pace instead of a fast one. Bully Max 24/14 High Protein & Growth Puppy Food fits that profile: 24% protein, 14% fat, 419 calories per cup, real lamb, and suitable for large-breed puppies under AAFCO guidelines. Below is what to look for, how much to feed by age and weight, and when to switch to adult food.

Cane Corso puppy food at a glance

  • Formula: a growth or all-life-stages food whose label says it is suitable for large-size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
  • Numbers: about 22 to 26% protein and 12 to 16% fat, with a named meat meal or meat first.
  • Calcium: controlled, not supplemented. Never add calcium on top of a complete puppy food.
  • Meals: 3 to 4 a day until 6 months, then 2 a day.
  • Pace: lean and steady. You should feel ribs under a light cover at every age.
  • Switch to adult food: around 12 to 18 months, when growth slows.

Why a Cane Corso Puppy Needs a Large-Breed Growth Food

A Cane Corso goes from about one pound at birth to 90 to 110 pounds as an adult. That is a lot of bone to build in 18 months, and the way you feed the puppy decides how well it is built. Two things matter more than anything else: how fast the puppy grows, and how much calcium it gets.

Fast growth is the problem, not big size. A giant-breed puppy that is pushed with extra calories grows faster than its joints and growth plates can keep up with. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that excess calcium is most problematic for growing large- and giant-breed dogs between weaning and one year, because young dogs cannot regulate how much calcium they absorb from an over-supplemented diet. That is why AAFCO added a separate growth profile for large-size dogs in 2016, with a narrower calcium range. A food that meets it will say so on the bag: "including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult)."

So the two rules for a Corso puppy are simple. Feed a complete growth food that is labeled for large-size dogs, and feed it to a lean body condition, not to a target weight. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines.

What to Look for on the Label

  • Nutritional adequacy statement. It should name "growth" or "all life stages" and include large-size dogs. If it says "except for growth of large size dogs," keep looking.
  • Protein from meat. Growth needs more protein than maintenance. AAFCO's minimum for growth is 22.5% on a dry-matter basis, against 18% for adults. A named meat meal (lamb meal, chicken meal, beef meal) first on the list is a concentrated protein source with the water already removed.
  • Moderate fat and calories. A Corso puppy does not need a 600-calorie performance food. Somewhere around 400 to 450 calories per cup lets you feed a satisfying bowl without overloading the puppy.
  • Omega-3s and DHA. Fish oil, flaxseed and fish meal supply the fats a growing brain and coat use.
  • Digestive support. Probiotics, prebiotic fiber like inulin, or a postbiotic such as TruMune help a puppy's gut handle the changes of weaning, rehoming and vaccinations.

How Much to Feed a Cane Corso Puppy

Feed by the chart on the bag, then adjust to body condition. The amounts below come from the Bully Max 24/14 Puppy Food feeding guide, which is based on the puppy's current weight. Cane Corso weights by age vary a lot between lines, so weigh your puppy every week and use the weight, not the age, to pick the row.

Puppy weight Typical Corso age (approx.) 24/14 Puppy per day (est.) Meals per day
9 - 14 lb 6 - 8 weeks 1¼ - 1¾ cups 4
14 - 18 lb 8 - 10 weeks 1¾ - 2¼ cups 4
18 - 23 lb 10 - 12 weeks 2¼ - 2½ cups 3 - 4
27 - 32 lb 3 - 4 months 3 - 3¼ cups 3
32 - 36 lb 4 months 3¼ - 3¾ cups 3
About 50 lb 5 - 6 months about 4¼ cups 3
About 65 lb 6 - 7 months about 4¾ cups 2 - 3
About 80 lb 8 - 10 months about 5¼ cups 2

Estimates from the Bully Max 24/14 Puppy Food feeding chart (8 oz cup). The chart adds ½ cup for each additional 15 lb over 36 lb. Ages are typical for the breed, not a target. Adjust by about 10% at a time to keep the puppy lean.

Two checks keep you honest. First, the ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat at every age. A round, heavy Corso puppy is not a healthy one. Second, the growth curve: steady gains week to week, no jumps. If your puppy's ribs disappear, cut the portion by about 10% and hold for a week. If the hips and spine stand out, add 10%. Our puppy growth chart explains what a normal curve looks like.

Split the day's food into 3 or 4 meals until about 6 months, then 2 meals. Large, deep-chested breeds like the Corso are at higher risk of bloat, so feed smaller meals, avoid hard exercise for an hour after eating, and ask your vet about bloat prevention.

Feeding Schedule by Age

8 to 12 weeks

Four meals a day. Keep the breeder's food for the first few days, then switch over 7 to 10 days by mixing a little more of the new food into each meal. You can soften the kibble with warm water for the first couple of weeks. This is also when a puppy's gut is under the most stress from the move, so a food with digestive support earns its place.

3 to 6 months

Three meals a day. This is the fastest growth phase, and the phase where overfeeding does the most harm. Weigh weekly, keep the ribs easy to feel, and resist the urge to "bulk up" the puppy. Muscle comes later, with maturity and exercise.

6 to 12 months

Two meals a day. Growth slows but does not stop. Stay on the puppy food. The chart amounts keep rising with weight, but the puppy's calorie need per pound is falling, so do not be surprised when the portion plateaus around 5 cups.

12 to 18 months: switch to adult food

A Corso is usually ready for adult food between 12 and 18 months, when height has stopped and weight gain is slow. Move to the adult formula over 7 to 10 days. For a lean, active young Corso, 30/20 High Protein Chicken (535 calories per cup) or chicken-free 30/20 Beef (530) keep the muscle on. For a Corso that gains easily, 25/11 Lamb has 45% less fat. Our guide on when to switch to adult dog food covers the signs, and best dog food for Cane Corso compares the adult options.

Mistakes That Hurt Cane Corso Puppies

  • Adding calcium or bone meal. A complete puppy food already has the right amount. Extra calcium is the one supplement that does measurable damage to growing large-breed joints.
  • Free feeding. A bowl that is always full produces a fat puppy. Measured meals at set times produce a lean one and make house training easier.
  • Feeding an adult performance food too early. High-calorie adult foods are built for working dogs, not for growth. Stay on a growth formula until the growth plates close.
  • Chasing the biggest puppy in the litter. Adult size is set by genetics. Overfeeding does not make a bigger Corso; it makes a heavier one with worse joints.
  • Switching foods every time stool softens. Loose stool in a puppy is usually overfeeding, a too-fast switch, or treats. Fix those first. Loose stool that lasts more than a day or two, or any vomiting or lethargy, needs a vet.

Supplements: What Helps and What to Skip

On a complete growth food, most Corso puppies need nothing else. Skip calcium, skip "growth" powders that are mostly calories. Two things can help: a fish oil for omega-3s if the food is light on them (Bully Max 24/14 already includes fish meal and fish oil), and a puppy multivitamin with a vet's okay for a puppy that has been sick or is recovering from parasites. FAQ

What is the best puppy food for a Cane Corso?

A complete growth food labeled as suitable for large-size dogs, with a named meat first, about 22 to 26% protein and 12 to 16% fat, and controlled calcium. Bully Max 24/14 High Protein & Growth Puppy Food meets that description with 24% protein, 14% fat and 419 calories per cup.

How much should a Cane Corso puppy eat a day?

By weight, not age. On Bully Max 24/14, a 20 lb puppy gets about 2¼ to 2½ cups a day, a 35 lb puppy about 3¼ to 3¾ cups, and a 65 lb puppy about 4¾ cups, split into 3 or 4 meals. These are estimates from the feeding chart; adjust to keep the ribs easy to feel.

How many times a day should I feed a Cane Corso puppy?

Four meals a day until about 12 weeks, three meals until about 6 months, then two meals a day for life. Smaller meals also lower the risk of bloat in a deep-chested breed.

When should a Cane Corso switch to adult food?

Between 12 and 18 months, once height has stopped and weight gain has slowed. Switch over 7 to 10 days.

Should I give my Cane Corso puppy calcium?

No. A complete large-breed puppy food already contains the right amount, and extra calcium is linked to joint and bone problems in fast-growing large breeds. Ask your vet before adding any supplement.

Is Bully Max 24/14 safe for large-breed puppies?

Yes. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines. 24/14 Puppy has a maximum of 1.8% calcium.
