Is Lamb Good for Dogs? When to Choose Lamb Dog Food Over Chicken or Beef

Yes. Lamb is a complete, highly digestible animal protein that supplies every amino acid a dog needs, plus iron, zinc and B vitamins. It is a good choice for dogs that itch, scratch or get loose stool on chicken, for dogs that simply eat it better, and, in a lower-fat recipe, for dogs that gain weight easily. Lamb is not automatically "hypoallergenic" and not automatically leaner than chicken; the recipe decides that. Here is what lamb does well, when to choose it, and how Bully Max 25/11 Lamb and 24/14 Puppy use it.

What Lamb Gives a Dog

Dogs are built to use animal protein, and lamb is one of the best-tolerated sources of it. Nutritionally it is close to beef: a red meat that is rich in iron, zinc, selenium and vitamin B12, with a full amino acid profile. In a dog food it is almost always used as lamb meal, which is lamb cooked and dried to remove the water, so it carries three to four times the protein of fresh lamb by weight. A named lamb meal first on the ingredient list means the protein in the bag is mostly from the lamb, not from plant fillers. Our guide to the best protein sources for dogs ranks the options.

Lamb Chicken Beef
Protein quality Complete, highly digestible Complete, highly digestible Complete, highly digestible
Iron, zinc, B12 High (red meat) Moderate High (red meat)
Fat Depends on the cut and recipe Usually leaner Depends on the cut and recipe
Reported food sensitivities Reported, but less often than chicken or beef Among the most commonly reported Among the most commonly reported

General comparisons for the proteins; the finished food's guaranteed analysis matters more. A 2016 review of published cases found beef, dairy, chicken and wheat the most frequently reported food allergens in dogs, with lamb reported less often.

Lamb vs Chicken Dog Food

Chicken is the most common protein in dog food, which is part of why it shows up so often in reports of food sensitivity: the proteins dogs eat most are the ones they react to most. Lamb was for years the "novel protein" vets reached for when a dog itched on chicken, and it still works that way for many dogs, although it is common enough now that it is no longer novel for every dog. The practical rule: if your dog has itchy skin, paw licking, recurring ear trouble or loose stool on a chicken food, a chicken-free lamb food is a sensible first switch. Give it 6 to 8 weeks, because skin and coat take that long to turn over, and see your vet if the signs persist, since itching has several causes and a true allergy is confirmed by an elimination diet under a vet's direction.

The second difference is in the recipe, not the meat. Bully Max 30/20 Chicken is a 20% fat, 535-calorie food for active dogs and weight gain. Bully Max 25/11 Lamb is an 11% fat, 415-calorie food for dogs that need a leaner bowl. Choosing lamb at Bully Max is also choosing 45% less fat, which is right for some dogs and wrong for others. See chicken vs beef dog food for the third option.

Which Dogs Do Best on Lamb

  • Dogs sensitive to chicken. The most common reason owners switch. Bully Max 25/11 Lamb contains no chicken whatsoever, including in its natural flavor.
  • French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs and other easy gainers. Frenchies are 10% of Bully Max buyers, and most do not need a 535-calorie food. 25/11 Lamb keeps the meat-based protein at 25% while cutting fat to 11%, so a 25 lb Frenchie eats a satisfying 1½ cups a day without gaining. Read the best food for French Bulldogs and best dog food for bulldogs.
  • Less active and older dogs. A dog that walks twice a day and sleeps the rest needs fewer calories than a working dog. Lower fat lets you keep the bowl full.
  • Dogs on a weight-loss plan, with the target weight set by your vet.
  • Dogs with sensitive stomachs that do better on a single, consistent red-meat protein and moderate fat.
  • Puppies. Lamb meal is the first ingredient in Bully Max 24/14 Puppy Food, with 24% protein, 14% fat and 419 calories per cup, suitable for large-breed puppies under AAFCO guidelines.

Which Dogs Should Not Be on a Low-Fat Lamb Food

Lamb the protein suits almost every dog. Lamb the low-fat recipe does not suit a hard keeper. A lean, high-drive pit bull, a working Cane Corso or an intact male in training needs 20% fat and 530 to 600 calories per cup, and will lose condition on 415. If your dog needs chicken-free and needs the calories, Bully Max 30/20 Beef keeps the 30% protein and 20% fat with no chicken in it. If your dog is on Lamb for its stomach or skin and starts looking thin, add calories back with a daily pour of Omega-3 Salmon Oil or Power Chews for Weight Gain rather than switching proteins again. Our chicken-free dog food guide lays out the choice.

Switching a Dog to Lamb

Mix the new food in over 7 to 10 days: 25% for two days, then 50%, 75% and 100%. Recalculate the portion from the calories per cup, because moving from a 535-calorie food to a 415-calorie one means a bigger scoop for the same calories, not the same scoop. If the switch is for skin or ears, judge at 6 to 8 weeks. The schedule is in how to switch your dog to Bully Max.

FAQ

Is lamb good for dogs?

Yes. Lamb is a complete, digestible red-meat protein rich in iron, zinc and B12. It suits most dogs and is a common first switch for dogs sensitive to chicken.

Is lamb better than chicken for dogs?

Not better, different. Both are complete proteins. Lamb is reported as a food allergen less often than chicken, so it helps dogs that react to chicken. In Bully Max, the lamb recipe is also 45% lower in fat than the chicken recipe, so pick by your dog's calorie needs as well.

Is lamb good for dogs with allergies?

It can be, if the dog is sensitive to chicken or beef and not to lamb. No protein is hypoallergenic for every dog. Switch to a chicken-free lamb food for 6 to 8 weeks and see your vet to confirm a true allergy.

Is lamb dog food good for sensitive stomachs?

Often, yes. A single red-meat protein with moderate fat and probiotics is easier on many dogs than a high-fat food. Bully Max 25/11 Lamb has 11% fat and a multi-strain probiotic blend. Persistent vomiting or diarrhea needs a vet visit.

Is lamb dog food fattening?

Lamb itself is no more fattening than any other meat. The recipe sets the calories. Bully Max 25/11 Lamb is the leanest food in the lineup at 415 calories per cup and 11% fat.

Can puppies eat lamb dog food?

Yes. Bully Max 24/14 Puppy Food has lamb meal as its first ingredient, with 24% protein and 14% fat, and is suitable for large-breed puppies under AAFCO guidelines. Puppies need a growth formula, not the adult 25/11 recipe.

Lamb for the Right Dog

If your dog itches on chicken, eats lamb with more enthusiasm, or carries weight too easily, Bully Max 25/11 Lamb is the food to try: lamb meal first, chicken-free, 25% protein and 45% less fat. If your dog needs chicken-free and the full calories, choose 30/20 Beef. For a puppy, 24/14 starts with real lamb.
