How to Help a Rescue Pitbull Gain Weight and Muscle Safely

Rescue bullies often come home thin, weak and stressed. With the right food, a slow ramp-up in exercise and a lot of patience, most of them can get back to a healthy weight and build real muscle. This guide walks you through doing it safely, step by step.

Building muscle in bully breeds comes down to two things: a high-quality, high-protein diet and a mix of cardio and strength exercise. For a rescue, the order matters. Weight and health come first. Muscle comes second.

Quick answer

  • See your vet first to rule out parasites, dental pain and illness before you change food or add exercise.
  • Feed for the dog's target weight, not its current weight, split into 3–4 smaller meals a day.
  • Go slow. Weigh weekly and adjust portions in small steps. Severely underweight dogs need a vet-guided plan.
  • Add exercise once the dog is at a healthy weight, starting with cardio, then strength work.
  • Stay consistent. Most dogs show visible changes within a few weeks, but building muscle is a long-term project.

Start With a Vet Check

Many rescues are underweight for a reason. Worms, bad teeth, skin infections and other health problems can all stop a dog from gaining weight no matter how much it eats. Book a vet visit first, and ask about deworming, a dental check and basic bloodwork.

If your dog is severely underweight, ask your vet for a refeeding plan. Starved dogs need to be brought back up slowly, because large meals too fast can make them sick.

Safe Weight Gain in a Rescue Bully

Most rescue bullies show some level of malnutrition from poor care and lack of exercise. Give their bodies time to recover with a high-quality diet, and only introduce exercise as their weight improves.

Feed based on your dog's ideal weight, not its current weight. For example, an adult male Pit Bull weighing 25 pounds is underweight if his ideal weight is closer to 36 pounds, so his portions should be based on 36 pounds. Use our dog food calculator for a starting point, and see our guide to average pitbull weight and size.

Every dog is different. Weigh your dog weekly and adjust portions in small steps. If your dog isn't gaining after two weeks, talk to your vet.

A calorie-dense food helps a lot here. Underweight dogs often can't eat big volumes, so more calories per cup means more fuel in every meal. Weight gain supplements can add calories on top of food without making meals bigger.

Once your rescue is at a healthy weight, it's time to add exercise and start building muscle.

Cardiovascular/Aerobic Exercise

Cardio is any activity that raises your dog's heart rate. It matters for bullies because it:

  • Burns calories and helps maintain a healthy weight
  • Strengthens the heart and lungs for better endurance
  • Builds the stamina your dog needs before strength work

Recommended Activities

  • Flirt pole: high-intensity play that works the body and the mind
  • Treadmill or slat mill: great for bad weather or controlled conditioning
  • Sprints: short bursts that build speed and power
  • Walking and jogging: the best warm-up before harder work

Safety tip: Choose soft surfaces like grass, dirt trails or rubber tracks over concrete to protect joints.

Resistance/Strength Exercise

Resistance training makes your dog's muscles work against a load. It matters for bullies because it:

  • Builds muscle through controlled effort
  • Strengthens bones, joints and tendons
  • Improves power, stamina and agility

Recommended Activities

  • Spring pole: your dog pulls and hangs on a bungee-mounted tug
  • Weighted vest: worn on walks or treadmill work, starting light
  • Elastic bands: pulling against a bungee leash
  • Sled or weight pull: only with a proper pulling harness

Safety tip: Start with light resistance and short sessions to avoid injuries like torn ligaments or heat stroke. Hold off on heavy resistance work until your dog is fully grown, and ask your vet before starting.

30-Day Muscle Building Guide

Start this plan once your vet has cleared your dog and your rescue is at a healthy weight. Week 1 is mostly cardio to build stamina. Strength work increases from week 2. Split each day into shorter sessions and give water and rest between them.

30-day dog muscle building workout schedule

Week Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
1 Walk / light jog 30 min Flirt pole 20 min Sprints 20 min Flirt pole 30 min Spring pole 20 min Jog 30 min Rest
2 Walk / light jog 40 min Flirt pole 20 min Sprints 30 min Elastic bands 30 min Spring pole 20 min Jog 40 min Rest
3 Walk / light jog 50 min Flirt pole 30 min Sprints (vest) 20 min Weight pull 15 min Spring pole 30 min Jog 50 min Rest
4 Walk / light jog 60 min Flirt pole 30 min Sprints (vest) 40 min Weight pull 30 min Spring pole 30 min Jog 60 min Rest

Times are totals for the day. Split them into shorter sessions with water and rest breaks, and scale back for any dog that is still building fitness.

Success Story of a Rescue Bully on Bully Max

“Molly”

Molly is a great example of a Rescue Bully who benefited from a proper diet and exercise. The transformation within 30 days is incredible. Here is her story.

“This is my dog, Molly. I rescued her from my abusive ex after my children begged me to take her in - she had been mistreated and beaten. On her first day home, I took her outside, and people walking by snickered and laughed, telling me to feed my dog. It made me incredibly upset and angry.

Later that night, I searched online for the best food for a pit bull and discovered Bully Max. I was initially taken aback by the price - not going to lie - I joked it’d better contain caviar and diamonds! Molly spent two years in a cage, so she was very timid and shy. After just 30 days on Bully Max, she gained 10 pounds. We probably shower her with extra love to make up for her earlier mistreatment.

Thanks to Bully Max, she now has lots of energy and is very playful - whereas before, she did nothing but hide. She used to walk with her head down and tail between her legs. Now she’s happy and excited. I truly feel that Bully Max saved her life.”

FAQ

How fast should a rescue dog gain weight?

Slowly and steadily. Weigh your dog weekly and adjust portions in small steps. Very thin dogs need a vet-guided refeeding plan, because gaining too fast can make them sick.

How long does it take to build muscle on a pit bull?

Most dogs show visible changes within a few weeks of consistent feeding and exercise, but building real muscle takes months. Consistency matters more than intensity.

What should I feed an underweight rescue pit bull?

A complete, calorie-dense, high-protein food fed in 3–4 smaller meals a day, based on your dog's target weight. A weight gain supplement can add extra calories without making meals bigger.

Can I use a weighted vest on my rescue?

Only after your dog is at a healthy weight, fully grown and cleared by your vet. Start light and keep sessions short.

The only disappointment on the American bully that I had is it has a strong body odor.
