Is Bully Max Good for Dogs? What 1,351 Owners Told Us

Yes. For most healthy dogs, and especially bully breeds, Bully Max is a strong choice: it’s calorie-dense, high-protein, meat-based food made in the USA with zero recalls. But you shouldn’t take our word for it. We asked our own customers why they chose Bully Max, and 1,351 of them gave us 2,425 answers. This is what they said, in their own words, and what it means for picking the right food for your dog.

What 1,351 customers told us

  • Who they are: 62% own an American Bully, a pit bull type dog, or both. Cane Corsos and French Bulldogs are next, at about 10% each.
  • Why they chose us: reviews and results they could see came first (25%), then food made for bully breeds, protein and calories, and quality and trust.
  • The problems they wanted solved: picky eaters, dull coats and messy digestion, dogs that wouldn’t hold weight, and puppies they wanted to grow right.
  • How they found us: 39% of written answers said Google or an online search.
  • When they decided: the most common answer was “after reading reviews or testimonials” (22%).
  • The proof: over 50,000 5/5 reviews, a 5/5 rating from Dog Food Advisor, zero recalls, every batch triple tested, made in the USA by a family-owned company founded in 2009.

Before we go further, a quick note on fuel: if your dog needs more strength and energy from the bowl, a meat-based, high-protein food is the simplest place to start.

About the Survey: Who We Asked and How

After checkout, Bully Max customers can answer a few short questions. We pulled every answer collected between December 2024 and June 2025: 2,425 answers from 1,351 customers. Most questions were open-ended, so people wrote whatever came to mind. We read every written answer and grouped them into themes. One answer can count toward more than one theme, so the percentages in each chart add up to more than 100%.

Two honest caveats. First, these are people who had just bought from us, so this is a customer survey, not a neutral product test or a scientific study. Second, every dog is different. What the survey does show is why real owners chose Bully Max, the problems they were trying to solve, and the language they used to describe them. If you’re weighing the same decision, that’s useful.

Here’s a quick look at what Bully Max is about before we get into the numbers.

Who Buys Bully Max: The Breeds Our Customers Own

Bully Max was built for bully breeds, and the survey shows it. About six in ten customers own an American Bully (standard, XL, pocket or exotic) or a pit bull type dog (APBT, AmStaff or Staffy). After that come the big guardian breeds and the French Bulldog.

Base: 780 answers to “What type of dog breed(s) do you have?” Many customers own more than one dog, so shares add up to more than 100%.

An American Pit Bull Terrier (left) and an American Bully (right): the two types of dog owned by about six in ten of our customers.

The long tail matters too. Customers also feed Bully Max to Dobermans, Boxers, Huskies, Labs, Malinois and plenty of mixes. One customer put it simply when we asked how they knew it worked beyond bullies: “Good food is good food, regardless of breed.” Not sure where your dog fits? Our guide to which dogs are bully breeds covers it, and the chooser table below matches each breed and goal to a formula.

Why Owners Switched: The Top Reasons

We asked, “What made you choose Bully Max over other brands?” Here is every theme that came up, ranked by how often customers mentioned it.

Base: 544 written answers to “What made you choose Bully Max over other brands?” (460) and “What finally convinced you…?” (84). Answers can fall into more than one theme.

Two things stand out. Price barely registers: only 3% mentioned it, and some of those said the food costs more than they’re used to. People switch for results and for trust. And social media gets people looking, but proof closes the sale. As one customer wrote:

“The ads grabbed me but the reviews made me stay”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

The sections below take each reason in turn: the problem owners had, what Bully Max does about it, and which product fits.

1. Reviews and Results They Could See

The problem: every bag in the pet store promises a healthier dog. Owners told us they wanted proof from real dogs before spending money on a new food. A quarter of all answers were about reviews, results, or what they saw Bully Max do for a friend’s dog.

“I can see the difference in dogs using it vs dogs that are not”

Many of the results owners see come from show and sport dogs. Here, ABKC champions talk about feeding Bully Max:

2. Made for Bully Breeds and Big Dogs

The problem: bully breeds are built differently. They carry more muscle for their size, many are very active, and owners want them to look the part. Generic “all dogs” food left a lot of customers feeling their dog was being fed for an average dog, not for theirs.

“I bought a bully dog and rather get something that is meant for bully’s”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: we started in 2009 with bully breeds in mind, and every formula is built around high-performance, meat-based nutrition. That means more protein and more calories per cup than the typical bag. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines, which matters if you own an XL Bully, a Cane Corso or a Mastiff.

Owners in this group kept it short: they wanted food made for pits, for XL Bullies and for big breeds. For a breed-by-breed breakdown, read our complete guide to the best dog food for American Bullies.

3. Protein, Calories and Ingredients

The problem: owners read labels. They wanted more protein and more calories per cup than their old food gave them. They asked for “high protein,” “high calorie” and “quality ingredients.”

“Amount of protein and fat in a bag!”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: packs more into every cup. Here is how our dry foods compare with a typical everyday adult kibble.

Food Protein Fat Calories per cup Best for
Typical adult kibble (general range) About 20–26% About 10–16% About 350–400 Average adult dogs
30/20 High Protein Chicken 30% 20% 535 Active adults, muscle, condition
30/20 High Protein Beef 30% 20% 530 Same goals, chicken-free
PRO Series 31/25 31% 25% 600 Working and sport dogs
25/11 Lamb, 45% less fat 25% 11% 415 Easy keepers, Frenchies, chicken-free

Bully Max figures from current product pages. The “typical kibble” row is a general range, not a specific brand. Check any bag’s guaranteed analysis and calorie statement to compare.

Calorie density changes how much you scoop. Say your dog needs about 1,600 calories a day, which is in the range of an active dog around 75 lb. That works out to about 3 cups of 30/20 at 535 calories per cup, versus about 4.2 cups of a 380-calorie food. Those are estimates for illustration only; your dog’s needs depend on age, activity and body condition. Use our dog food calculator for your own number, and see why Bully Max can cost less per day for the price math.

Why meat-based? Dogs use animal protein well, and it supplies the amino acids that support muscle. Our guide to meat-based dog food goes deeper.

Our best seller is the food most survey customers started with: 30% protein, 20% fat and 535 calories per cup. Want to test it first? Start with the 5 lb bag, then move to the 15 lb bag.

4. Quality, Trust, Made in USA and Zero Recalls

The problem: owners worry about what’s in the bag and who made it. Some told us they had lost trust in their old brand. Others simply wrote “Quality,” “Trust” or “No recalls” and left it at that.

“Was never recalled and my Dogs love the taste”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: keeps the promise simple and checkable.

The Bully Max quality standard

  • Family-owned U.S. company, founded in 2009 and based in Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Made in the USA.
  • Every batch triple tested for safety.
  • Zero recalls.
  • High-performance, meat-based nutrition in every formula.
  • Rated 5/5 by Dog Food Advisor, with over 50,000 5/5 customer reviews and millions of dogs served.

If you’re comparing brands, our guide on how to choose dog food walks through labels, calories and ingredients so you can judge any bag, including ours.

5. Picky Eaters Finally Eat

The problem: this one came up again and again. Dogs that walk away from the bowl, dogs that only eat with toppings, dogs that won’t touch store food. For owners trying to build a dog up, a picky eater is the hardest problem of all.

“High protein and high calorie food for my dog who REFUSED to eat anything else but your food :)”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

“She won’t eat dog food from the store so I thought I would try ur brand”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: meat-based recipes in a calorie-dense kibble, so every bite counts for more. If your dog only eats part of a meal, a dense food still delivers more of what they need than a light one would. A few other tools help:

  • Mix in wet food. 26/12 Instant Wet Dog Food is just add water, with real chicken first and 592 calories per cup.
  • Use a topper. Freeze-dried raw beef or salmon toppers add real meat to any bowl.
  • Set meal times. Put the bowl down for about 15 minutes, then pick it up until the next meal. Free-feeding is a common cause of picky eating.
  • Switch slowly. Mix the new food in over 7 to 10 days so the change doesn’t upset the stomach.

A dog that suddenly stops eating, or loses weight without a reason, should see a vet. Picky is a habit; refusing food can be a symptom.

This short video shows the feeding-schedule method step by step:

A clean bowl is the best review there is.

6. Coat, Skin and Digestion

The problem: dull coats, dry skin, gas and big messy stools. Owners notice these every day, and they’re often what makes someone finally switch foods.

“I began to notice the positive change in their coats, build, and digestion”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

Others kept it short. They mentioned a shinier coat, smaller and fewer stools, and less gas than on their old food.

What Bully Max does: starts with meat-based protein and fat, which a healthy coat depends on. Our 30/20 Chicken and 24/14 Puppy foods also include TruMune, added to support digestion and immune health. For dogs that do better without chicken, 30/20 Beef and 25/11 Lamb are chicken-free. To add more omega-3 for skin and coat, many owners pour on Omega-3 Salmon Oil (wild-caught Alaskan, with EPA and DHA), or use 9-in-1 Vitality Chews for daily gut, skin, coat and joint support.

Food is only one piece. Itching, hair loss, ongoing diarrhea or vomiting all deserve a vet visit. For everyday issues, read our guides on how to firm up your dog’s stool and fixing a coarse, brittle coat.

7. Weight Gain for Skinny Dogs and Rescues

The problem: the hard keeper. A dog that eats and eats but stays thin. A rescue that came home underweight. A dog that drops weight every time training picks up. Owners in this group used phrases like “put on weight,” “keeping weight on” and “he’s skinny.”

“Well I just adopted an American bully from a family that couldn’t take care of him anymore. When I got him he was skinny but I used your food and he’s getting muscles”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: gives you more calories in less food, plus easy ways to add more:

Go slowly. Add calories gradually, weigh your dog every week or two, and aim for steady gain, not a fast jump. A dog that is losing weight for no clear reason needs a vet check first, since weight loss can have medical causes. Our step-by-step guides on helping your dog gain weight the healthy way and helping a rescue pit bull gain weight and muscle cover feeding plans and how to track progress.

8. Muscle, Size and Condition

The problem: owners want a dog that looks and moves like the breed should: tight, muscular and full of energy. They wrote about “muscle definition,” “bulk” and dogs that looked “buff.”

“i actually care about what my dog eats. also she’s jacked now and super healthy”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: supplies the protein and calories muscle needs. Exercise does the building. Food alone won’t put muscle on a dog, and neither will exercise on too few calories. For extra support, Muscle Builder tablets are a daily tablet for muscle growth, strength and recovery, and Liquid Muscle Gain adds 150 calories per ounce with whey protein and amino acids.

For the training side, use our 30-day dog muscle building guide and how to build muscle on a dog with food.

9. Puppy Growth

The problem: new owners want to get the first year right. Several customers had just brought home a bully or Cane Corso puppy and wanted a food made for that breed. One customer found us after searching Google for “high calorie puppy food.”

“I tried feeding one pup from a litter of 8 the bully max food to see the difference. I’m very impressed.”

— Bully Max customer, post-purchase survey

What Bully Max does: 24/14 High Protein & Growth Puppy Food has 24% protein and real lamb, plus TruMune to support digestion and immune health. It is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines, so it works for XL Bully, Cane Corso and Mastiff puppies as well as smaller bully breeds. For extra support, add Puppy Tabs for Development & Growth or mix in 26/12 Wet Puppy Food.

Big-breed puppies should grow steadily, not as fast as possible. Feed measured meals, keep them lean, and follow your vet’s growth checks. Our guides on choosing the best pitbull puppy food and when to switch to adult food cover the details.

Is Bully Max Right for Every Dog?

No food is. Here is our honest take on when to choose a different Bully Max formula, or talk to your vet first:

  • Dogs that gain weight easily. A 535-calorie cup is great for a hard keeper and too much for a couch potato. Choose 25/11 Lamb, measure meals and adjust to body condition.
  • Dogs with a medical condition or a prescription diet. If your vet has your dog on a therapeutic diet, keep it, and ask before changing anything.
  • Dogs with a known chicken sensitivity. Pick 30/20 Beef or 25/11 Lamb, which are chicken-free.
  • Seniors and low-activity dogs. They usually need fewer calories. Start on the low end of the feeding guide.

For everyone else, especially active bully breeds, big guardian breeds and growing puppies, Bully Max is built for exactly the problems our customers described.

How to Switch to Bully Max (and Save 10%)

Change foods gradually so your dog’s stomach can adjust:

Days Old food Bully Max
1–3 About 75% About 25%
4–6 About 50% About 50%
7–9 About 25% About 75%
10 and on 0% 100%

A general guide. Go slower if your dog has a sensitive stomach, and call your vet if loose stools last more than a couple of days.

Because Bully Max is calorie-dense, you’ll usually feed less than you did before. Check the feeding guide, weigh your dog every couple of weeks, and adjust.

Once you know what your dog does well on, put it on Autoship and save 10% on every order. It ships on your schedule, so you don’t run out mid-switch, and you can change or skip a delivery anytime.

FAQ

Is Bully Max good for dogs?

For most healthy dogs, yes, especially active bully breeds, large breeds and puppies. It’s high-protein, calorie-dense, meat-based food made in the USA, with every batch triple tested and zero recalls. Dog Food Advisor rates it 5/5, and customers have left over 50,000 5/5 reviews. Pick the formula that matches your dog’s activity and body condition.

Is Bully Max only for bully breeds?

No. It was built with bully breeds in mind, and about six in ten of our surveyed customers own American Bullies or pit bulls, but customers also feed it to Cane Corsos, French Bulldogs, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Labs, Huskies and mixes. Every Bully Max dog food is suitable for large-breed dogs, including large-breed puppies, under AAFCO guidelines.

Has Bully Max ever had a recall?

No. Bully Max has had zero recalls, and every batch is triple tested for safety.

Where is Bully Max made?

Bully Max is made in the USA. We’re a family-owned U.S. company founded in 2009 and based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Is Bully Max good for puppies?

Yes. 24/14 Puppy Food is made for growing puppies, with 24% protein, real lamb and TruMune, and it’s suitable for large-breed puppies under AAFCO guidelines. Feed measured meals and keep growth steady.

Why does Bully Max cost more per bag?

Because there’s more in each cup. At 535 calories per cup, 30/20 usually means fewer cups per day than a lighter food, so compare cost per day, not cost per bag. Our breakdown of what Bully Max really costs per day shows the math, and Autoship saves 10% on every order.

2,425 answers, one clear message: owners switch to Bully Max for results they can see, food made for their breed, and a brand they can trust.
